How to get to Torcello
Table of Contents
Via Burano: line 9
The most reliable way to Torcello is via Burano. Line 9 shuttles between the two islands, takes about 5 minutes and, on the winter timetable, runs roughly every 15 minutes between 10:00 and 16:00. You get to Burano on line 12 from Fondamente Nove, which arrives there roughly every 20 minutes. How to get to Burano is explained on our Burano page.
From Fondamente Nove: line 12 direct
Some line 12 boats also stop at Torcello on their way to Burano, 19 a day on the winter timetable. From Fondamente Nove you're then there in about 35 to 38 minutes without changing. Not every boat stops there, so make sure yours calls at Torcello. If there's no direct boat due, take the next one to Burano and change to line 9 there.
Vidali boats from Murano
The boats run by Consorzio Vidali can be booked in advance, with a guaranteed seat. One service runs from Murano to Torcello, another from Torcello on to Burano. From Burano, a Vidali boat runs back to San Marco.
Day trip to Murano, Burano and Torcello
Torcello is usually the last stop on a round trip through the northern lagoon. From Fondamente Nove take line 12, get off at Murano Faro for Murano, then continue on line 12 to Burano. From there it's another 5 minutes on line 9 to Torcello. To get back, take line 9 to Burano and line 12 from there to Fondamente Nove. For a day like this, a travel card usually works out better than single tickets; the fares are on our Prices page.
What makes Torcello special
On Torcello's Piazzetta stands an early medieval ensemble: the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, its baptistery and the church of Santa Fosca. In the Palazzo dell'Archivio and the Palazzo del Consiglio, the Museo di Torcello, founded in 1870, tells the story of Venice's origins through archaeological finds and medieval art. The pieces come from Torcello, the northern islands and ancient Altino. The cathedral has a dress code: shoulders and knees covered.
Venice access fee
The access fee for day visitors applies to the historic centre of Venice. Torcello is one of the smaller islands where the city did not charge the fee in 2026. If your route to the vaporetto stop takes you through the historic centre, its rules apply on the days the fee is charged.
