FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Overnight ferries to Greece, summer catamarans to Istria and the boats to the islands of the lagoon.
Routes, ships and seasons
What's the difference between the ferries to Greece and the catamarans? +
Large Blue Star Ferries ships sail to Igoumenitsa and Patras, with cabins, seats and a vehicle deck. Fast catamarans run by Kompas and Venezia Lines cross to Istria and Piran; they are foot-passenger only and carry no vehicles.
How often does the ferry to Greece sail? +
All year round; on the 2026 timetable usually on Wednesdays and Saturdays, in some periods on Sundays as well. The days change from one timetable period to the next. The timetable shows which sailings fall within your travel dates.
Do the catamarans to Istria run in winter? +
No. In 2026 Kompas sails from May to mid-October, and Venezia Lines from April to October. The timetable shows which sailings fall within your travel dates.
Is there a direct ferry to Corfu? +
Only on a handful of dates: in 2026 the ferry from Venice called at Corfu on just a few summer sailings. Usually you sail to Igoumenitsa and take a ferry across to Corfu from there.
Terminals and getting there
Which terminal do the ferries to Greece leave from? +
From the Fusina ferry terminal on Via dell'Elettronica in Fusina, on the mainland west of the lagoon. That's not the historic centre: if you're arriving by car, you drive straight there and don't need to go into Venice at all.
Where do the catamarans to the Istrian coast leave from? +
From the San Basilio ferry terminal on Fondamenta Zattere Al Ponte Lungo, right in the historic centre. It's about 1 km on foot from Piazzale Roma, or about 20 minutes on vaporetto (water bus) line 2. Our Terminals page explains how to get there.
How do I get to Fusina without a car? +
By bus 16 from Venezia Mestre railway station: the stop is about 100 m from the port office on Via dell'Elettronica. Vaporetto line 16 from Venice Zattere, on the other hand, docks at the Terminal Fusina Venezia on Via Moranzani, which is a different place.
Can I drive right up to the ship? +
Not in the historic centre, where cars stop at Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto. For the ferry to Greece, yes: the Fusina terminal is on the mainland and built for vehicles.
Vehicles, bikes and pets
Can I take my car or motorhome? +
On the ferries to Greece, yes: they carry cars, motorhomes and motorbikes, and Blue Star Ferries offers a discount to members of motoring and camping clubs. The catamarans to the Istrian coast do not carry vehicles.
What are the rules for electric and gas-powered vehicles? +
Blue Star Ferries only allows electric cars on board with the battery charged to no more than 40%, and LPG or CNG tanks may be no more than 50% full. Have your vehicle registration document ready at check-in.
Can my dog come on board? +
Yes, if you declare it when booking. On the ferries to Greece, animals travel in carriers or in dedicated pet cabins, not in standard cabins and not in the vehicle; in open areas, dogs must be on a lead and muzzled. You need an EU pet passport and a valid rabies vaccination.
Do the catamarans take dogs and cats? +
Venezia Lines allows dogs up to 60 cm long and 50 cm tall on board, on a lead and muzzled, and cats in a carrier. You need an EU pet passport and the required vaccinations, and the animal must be declared when you book.
Can I take a bicycle? +
On the catamarans, yes, for a supplement and only if you reserve when booking: space is tight, and nothing is guaranteed without advance notice. For the ferry to Greece, you also add the bike when you book.
Tickets, check-in and cancellations
How early do I need to be at the terminal? +
For the ferry to Greece, Blue Star Ferries requires you to be in the boarding area at least three hours before departure, with or without a vehicle. For the catamaran, Kompas requires check-in at least 60 minutes before departure.
What ID do I need? +
A valid passport or national ID card. There is a border check on the catamarans to Istria, and Kompas requires a passport or an EU ID card, so if you don't hold an EU ID card, bring your passport. A driving licence does not count as ID.
How much does the crossing cost? +
That depends on the route, your accommodation and your vehicle: on the Greek route, deck passage, a reserved seat and a cabin are three different fares, while on the catamaran the season and the route make the difference. Our Prices page explains how the fare adds up.
Do children travel for less? +
Yes. On the Greek route, children aged 4 to 12 pay half the adult fare for the chosen accommodation; infants without their own seat pay only a flat fee, and with their own bed or seat they pay half. With Kompas, children aged 3 to 11 pay half and younger children travel free.
Can I change or cancel my booking? +
Venezia Lines accepts changes up to 72 hours before departure. The first change within 24 hours of booking is free, every further change costs a fee, and the passenger name can't be changed. The cancellation fee rises as departure gets closer: from seven days before, a flat fee per person; from six days to 72 hours before, half the fare; after that, and if you don't show up, there is no refund. Blue Star Ferries refunds the standard fare in full up to 22 days before departure, then progressively less, and nothing from 24 hours before departure. Promotional fares follow the terms of the promotion: early-booking tickets are non-refundable.
Lagoon and islands
How do I get to Murano, Burano and Torcello? +
Which vaporetto ticket do I need for a day on the islands? +
Can I drive onto the Lido? +
Yes, on the line 17 car ferry from Tronchetto. How the ticket works is explained on our Car ferry to the Lido page.
Do I pay the Venice access fee if I'm only going to the ferry? +
Not as long as you're only changing: if you stay at Piazzale Roma, Tronchetto, the Stazione Marittima or the San Basilio terminal, you are exempt. The Fusina ferry port is on the mainland, outside the historic centre. If you walk into the historic centre between 08:30 and 16:00 on a day when the fee applies, for example after arriving on the catamaran from Istria, you need a ticket, unless you are staying overnight in the municipality of Venice or are exempt for another reason. The smaller islands of the lagoon were exempt in 2026. The dates and amounts are on our Prices page.
