What makes the five islands special

  • Murano: in 1291 the Republic of Venice moved all its glassmaking here, and the Museo del Vetro holds the largest historical collection of Murano glass.
  • Burano: the lace museum occupies the old lace school of 1872, and in the mornings you can watch lacemakers at work.
  • Torcello: the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the baptistery and Santa Fosca form an early medieval ensemble.
  • Lido: home of the Venice Film Festival, the oldest film festival in the world, first held in 1932.
  • Chioggia: a separate municipality at the southern tip of the lagoon, known for the Corso del Popolo and its canals.

Boats you can book in advance

Alongside the ACTV lines, the Consorzio Vidali boats run daily between San Marco, Murano, Burano and Torcello. You can book them online for a set date.

Alilaguna, a separate operator from ACTV, runs the Linea Verde as an excursion via Murano and Torcello to Burano. The ACTV ticket is not valid on it.

The Venice access fee and the islands

On designated days, Venice charges an access fee for the historic centre. In 2026 the city exempted the smaller islands of the lagoon, including the Lido, Pellestrina, Murano, Burano and Torcello. If you're only changing at Piazzale Roma, Tronchetto or the San Basilio terminal and stay there, you don't pay either. Children under 14 are exempt. The 2026 charging period ended on 26 July, and the dates for 2027 are not yet set. The amounts are on our Prices page.
